We all love a relaxing soak in the tub, until we’re distracted by soap scum, rust stains, or grime that just won’t budge. If you’ve ever thought, “I’ll clean it later,” and then promptly forgot, you’re not alone. But here’s the good news: deep cleaning your bathtub doesn’t have to be a massive chore.

With the right tools and a little know-how, you can bring your tub back to life and make your bathroom feel like a spa. Ready to reclaim your soak space?

Let’s dive in.

Ready to transform your bathtub from grimy to gleaming?

Let’s dive into these easy, effective tips.

Tip #1 -  Clear the Area

Start by removing everything from in and around your bathtub, shampoo bottles, soap dishes, loofahs, rubber ducks (we won’t judge). This gives you full access to the surface and prevents products from getting in the way of your clean.

Tip #2 -  Tackle Rust Stains First with Iron Out

If your tub has rust stains (especially common around drains and fixtures), you’ll want to treat those first. Iron Out Rust Stain Remover is your best friend here.

  • Spray or apply it directly to the stained area.

  • Let it sit according to the label instructions (usually a few minutes).

  • Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

This step alone can make a huge difference, those orange and brown spots will disappear like magic.

Tip #3 - Break Down Grime with Dawn Dish Soap

Once the rust is gone, it’s time to get to the everyday grime, soap scum, body oil, and residue. Mix Dawn dish soap with warm water in a spray bottle or bucket.

  • Apply generously to the tub surface.

  • Let it sit for 5–10 minutes.

  • Use a sponge or soft cloth to scrub away the gunk.

Dawn cuts through grease and buildup without being harsh on your tub’s finish. It's gentle enough for regular use, too.

Tip #4 - Buff Out Stubborn Spots with 000 Steel Wool

For areas with stuck-on grime or mineral deposits (like around the faucet or drain), use 000 (extra fine) steel wool.

  • Lightly dampen the steel wool.

  • Gently buff the problem areas in a circular motion.

  • Rinse often to check progress.

Note: Always test a small area first. Extra fine steel wool is safe for most porcelain and enamel tubs, but it’s best to avoid on acrylic tubs or surfaces with delicate coatings.

Tip #5 - Rinse, Dry, and Shine

Once you’ve scrubbed and buffed, rinse your tub thoroughly with warm water to remove any cleaner residue. Dry with a microfiber cloth or towel to prevent water spots and give your tub that extra shine.

Bonus Tip – Keep It Fresh Between Deep Cleans

Want to keep your tub looking great longer?

  • Do a quick rinse after each use.

  • Wipe down with a squeegee or towel to prevent buildup.

  • Consider a monthly mini-clean to stay ahead of grime.

Soak Happy!

Deep cleaning your bathtub doesn’t need to be a full-day ordeal. With Iron Out, Dawn dish soap, and 000 steel wool, you can easily tackle stains and buildup without harsh chemicals or expensive products.

So go ahead treat yourself to that bath. You’ve earned it..
