Keeping your fridge clean doesn’t have to be a chore. A fresh, organized fridge saves you time, reduces waste, and even makes cooking more enjoyable. Here’s how to make it quick and easy.

How to Clean Your Fridge

We’ve all opened the fridge and been greeted by a mysterious smell or a sticky spill we swore we’d clean “later.” I’ve been there too. As someone who loves cooking but hates mess, I’ve learned that a clean fridge actually makes it easier to enjoy your time in the kitchen. Not to mention, it helps you avoid food waste and saves you money in the long run.

Ready to transform your fridge from funky to fresh? Let’s dive into these easy, effective tips.

Tip #1 - Empty Everything Out

Start with a clean slate. Take everything out of your fridge, yes, even the ketchup bottle from 2021. This gives you a clear view of what you’re working with and lets you check expiration dates as you go. Toss anything questionable and set aside what’s still good.

Tip #2 - Use Warm, Soapy Water (Not Harsh Cleaners)

Mix a bit of dish soap with warm water and use a sponge or microfiber cloth to wipe down all the shelves and drawers. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals—they can leave behind strong smells or even damage some surfaces. Remove drawers and shelves if possible and wash them in the sink for a thorough clean.

Tip #3 - Label & Organize as You Go

This is a great time to reorganize. Group similar items together, dairy, snacks, condiments—and consider labeling shelves or bins. I started labeling a “Use Me First” bin for items close to expiring, and it’s drastically cut down on waste in my house.

Tip #4 - Refresh with Baking Soda or Fridge Fresheners

Keep your fridge smelling fresh by placing an open box of baking soda on a shelf. You can also try specialized fridge deodorizers. Just remember to swap them out every 1–3 months for best results. It’s a small step that makes a big difference.

Tip #5 - Make It a Monthly Habit

Lastly, don’t wait for the science experiment to start growing in the back of your fridge. Set a reminder to do a mini clean-out once a month. A quick wipe and toss can save you from a big clean later on—and keep your kitchen running smoothly.

You’re All Set!

Cleaning your fridge doesn’t have to be a dreaded task. With just a little effort and a monthly routine, your fridge can stay fresh, organized, and stress-free.
